Another One Bites The Dust!

When I decided to take on the role of becoming a designer. I was heavily attracted to being able to express my ideas and thoughts. Once I was given the brief, I then had scope to create anything I wanted. Plus having the ability to create whatever flowed from my mind. These days I find it very hard to comprehend how people are relying heavily on other peoples work, in order to create a successful design.

Now I’m all for using something as inspiration in order to kick in those brain juice’s into action. But to actually “bite” another designers work… is beyond me. I find it hard to understand why someone would do that, and if you need to do that, then surely you are in the wrong industry. Designing is all about creation, bringing something fresh to the table. It saddens me to think that some people need to ‘bite’ in order to maintain a design style, they are unable to achieve on their own.

I also can’t understand why professional designers use templates. Why on earth would a ‘professional’ designer underestimate themselves, to warrant the need to use a template. Unless they lack the skills to accomplish that design, and if that’s the case, then get the correct education or quit!. Templates are for people who are unable to create a design, but need something to look good. Professional designers should be able to do all the skills involved in the template, as its what the customers are paying for (or not paying if your a freebie designer).

To me, designing is a way of expression, you create a piece of art thats original, warming, stands out, hits the right buttons, and it can hold its own. It’s a shame other people don’t look at it that way!

Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side!

Today I had a long over due meeting with my sledge hockey team committee. We discussed a lot of issues surrounding the club and it’s future and as time went on it hit me hard, that I really miss playing, and getting on ice firing pucks.

Now I took some time away (coming to a year now) from playing hockey as I’ve been playing since age 12, coaching a good few years too and I just got bored. Even though we had breaks I just got bored of the whole hockey thing. I even stopped following NHL on tv for a while as I just got fed up.

But since taking a complete break and deciding what I wanted to do with my hockey career, I found after a few months I really missed it. Hockey has given me so much in life and I came to realise it was always the missing piece once I walked away from it.

So I agreed to get involved in a charity session in two weeks. It involves skating 1mile on ice plus shooting at the goal. It’s for Sport Relief and will also have BBC cameras filming. This will be a chilled out training session so it’s good that I can get back involved in a relaxed way.

Since I took my break, new coaching staff have been brought in. So I can’t wait to start working with them. But all in all, I’ve realised sledge hockey was, and thankfully now is, a major part of my life. So it’s time I start giving back the amazing life it’s given me.

Don’t Let Life Pass You By

Don't Let Life Pass You By

The last few months I’ve had a lot of stuff on my mind about what i want to do in life. Whether designing is really what i want to do until i retire, or what i actually want to do for the rest of my days on this earth. It’s been getting me into a pickle and throwing my emotions all over the place to be honest. Time is ticking on while I’ve been trying to plan my future and I’ve come to realise I’m concentrating so much on work that my life is not moving on as a whole. So i decided to draw a line on things and drew this message in a bid to end the dilemmas and get a move on what my destiny will be!. I also used one of my favourite fonts too, i hope you like it!.

Welsh Mad

I’ve started getting involved in a new project called ‘Welsh Mad’ which is based around creating a more welsh community. Whether it be educating people to speak welsh, or getting people to start advertising there welsh roots, or simply talking about the local rugby.

I’ve found Wales is split up into sections where you’ve got your welsh vs non welsh speakers, traditional areas vs non traditional areas etc plus I’ve found non speakers would love to learn the language but don’t know where to start. Yet those that are fluent often alienate the ones that can’t.

So we need to get a community organised where people can join in together and also help bring old traditions back to life. So before we’ve merged so much with other country’s and loose all our heritage, we need to advertise ourselves to being welsh, and very proud of it.

The Alcoholic’s Laboratory

So a lot of the wine and alcohol that we have been making at my house has now started to come to fruitation (if that’s even a word). Basically it’s done brewing, and ready to get us all sloshed!

We made two Rosè wines. One black cherry, and one strawberry. They both came out fantastic with the cherry one seeming to have a lot more alcohol. No idea why.

I have a blackberry port bubbling up in a Demi John. I’ve had a taste sample to see if it’s progressing and it’s blooming fantastic. Very fruity, very alcoholic, very sweet, and very nice! So I will be bottling that into 1/2 bottles for consumption. Port is drank in moderation, and I’ve only made a small batch. So it will be used sparingly.

We also decided that our brewing name will be called ‘Silver Throne’. We thought using a family name has been done, and done, and done again! So we decided to go with something completely different. But it’s part of a story from our family’s legacy of wine making. Way before I was even born!

Ive decided I’m going to experiment with more fruit and create a crazy drink that’s silky smooth, refreshing, but alcoholic. I’m not sure what fruit yet but I’ll play around and come up with something. I’m going to name the drink something funny but haven’t a name yet, and it will hopefully be a ‘people’s friend’ at house party’s!! Hmm we’ll see.

This Evenings Adventures

This evening I hooked up with Andy. We had a laugh and he said about ‘sopa’ which apparently will start governing copyrighted material online. which is kind of mad as all the big organisations are clubbing together and striking etc! madness!.

I also started planning a sculpture im wishing to make. I’ll be sculpting it out of wood so it’s more of a sculpt/carving thing. But I’m blooming excited!. I’ll upload the pics during the process and when it’s finished.

My work on the new Urban Fusion website is practically done. Just waiting on more notes from Bibs. When he’s happy I can put it online. The design concept is very plain & basic. So plain in fact that there’s practically no design too it. But hey ho, I’m only told what to do on this project.

In other website stuff I managed to de-code a website that had been cyber hacked and manage to put it back online in one piece, getting rid of all the viruses. It was quite mad actually as its the same problem I seen a few websites having. Its sad when kids start making viruses to ruin things for everyone else. Little buggers!

Wear My Swag

I thought of the name randomly and got the domain name of ‘WearMySwag.com’ which I think would be awesome for a clothing type of site.

To be honest though, I have not got a clue on where I should go with this project. So if you have any ideas…let me know!

Keep Rollin’ With The Punches

Well my first full week back to work has gone quite well. I’m alot more organised lately which was a major downfall last year. To be honest I was always punctual & organised growing up. But the last few years I’ve been slacking really badly.

The website drama is still causing a tsunami in my brain, but not as bad since my last post. I’ve been able to get my head round some of this code for the shopping section. It’s made me push back the website reveal another 3 weeks. so I’m quite miffed about it.

Today I sat with my sister and ran through some ideas with her that ive got for the company. Plus I told her about what I plan to do design wise for everyone. This I can reveal yet, but it’s soo close till I can’t. Tomorrow im going for sum chill time with my best mate Andy Bassett. I’ve known him for a very long time and he’s a top lad. I like to bounce ideas with friends and people I can trust to honestly say if something’s good or bad.

I’m exhausted with the work rate and planning but I’m so excited about ImSoFunky. I think this is the first time I’ve been able to fully create my own project from start to finish. Plus I can be creative and wild as I can and have no one to answer too. I feel that ive served my time as an apprentice to all the businesses in cardiff and now it’s time I can put my own mark in the city. Its blooming fantastic!.

A New Day, A New Year!!

Sooo….. Christmas and new year festivities are over. It’s now time to get back to work and do the day job. Since my return, I’ve been flat out building the new ImSoFunky! Site. I’ve come close to finishing it but I’ve hit a snag. I’m trying to setup the shopping section and the e-commerce code I have needs a lot more attention than originally planned. What was originally scheduled for 3days coding & testing could turn into 3 weeks. So I’m quite gutted about that.

On a positive note I’ve found links to start making toys. So I’m going to start making my ImSoFunky star logo and a few other cartoons into plastic dolls. This should be fun! They’re going to me limited edition and collectors items. Depending on the demand I might branch out and make more. But for now I’m going to stick to small numbers.

Today I took time out of the office so my brain wouldn’t combust! & I hooked up for food with @rhysryall. Its good to catch up with close friends regularly as they help keep you focused.

Tomorrow ill be working on my site, plus I’ll start making sketches for the new @UrbanFusion website. Their brief is a basic site layout with small functionality. This should be a straight forward design. I’m looking forward to it.

Once that’s done I think I’ll put my feet up over a glass of baileys and relax on my Friday night as my brain will be frazzled with all the coding!. Lol. :)

Christmas

I’m not going to lie! I’m not the worlds best at organisation, but christmas hasn’t half krept up. I’m half way through my shopping and there’s about a week to go!! Argh!! With that in mind I’m going to hit Cardiff town tomorrow with @rhysryall and finish it all of. I’m quite looking forward to it to be honest!

Here’s a pic of my last shopping adventure. It’s a shop window display at macauther glen in Bridgend.
